CO2/Erbium Yag Laser Cortex™

We now use one of the most advanced laser systems to achieve improvement in wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and sun damage spots. The dual CO2 and Erbium Yag Laser transmits laser beams deep into the dermis to resurface tired, damaged surface skin while stimulating new healthy growth deep from within. This remarkable treatment is customized for each patient and helps to restore the natural glow and beauty of healthy, smooth skin.

The Erbium YAG Laser allows superficial ablative skin resurfacing, with less downtime if used without the CO2 laser. It works well for:
Superficial skin resurfacing, acting as a microlaser peel, improving skin texture
• Treating shallow wrinkles and lines
• Reduce brown spots

The Erbium Yag Laser could be used as alternative to a chemical peel. I will determine which treatment option is best for you based upon your skin concerns, history and expectations.

Fractional CO" laser resurfacing allows to treat the following:

• Chronologic aging/elastosis

Photo damage that includes laxity

Early rhytids

Acne scarring

Pigmented discolorations and scars

Ablation and resurfacing of soft tissue

Textural irregularities

Large pores

• Reduce brown spots

What type of patient can be treated with the Cortex™?

The Cortex™ CO2/Erbium Yag Laser is recommended for patients with fair to moderate skin who fall within the Fitzpatrick scale of I-III. The laser could cause hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) in patients with darker skin. The patient should not be nursing or pregnant, have an immunosuppressive or blood clotting disorder, skin condition or currently be smoking. The patient should be in good general health, with realistic expectations.

How long does treatment take?
This depends on the area being treated. Treatment can take as little as 15 minutes, but as long as 30 minutes if there is a large service area to be covered. The Cortex™ CO2/Erbium Yag Laser procedure is done in our state of the art center located at the Center for Head, Neck and Plastic Surgery.

What should I do to prepare for treatment?
Stay out of the sun and refrain from any laser or chemical peel treatments for at least 3-4 weeks prior to treatment. Retinoids should be stopped a few days before. Discuss any current medications that you are taking with the doctor. Fill any medication prescribed by the doctor prior to treatment.

Is treatment painful?
Every patient has a different pain threshold, but usually the Erbium:Yag resurfacing is not painful. Many patients describe the pulses of energy as warm and sometimes sharp. To reduce discomfort, we can apply a numbing cream with lidocaine prior to treatment to numb the area. This is left on approximately one hour prior to treatment.

What is the recovery time?
Patients should expect approximately 8 days of downtime. Outlined below is what you can expect on each day following treatment.
• Day 1 – you will look sunburned and your skin will feel tight
• Day 2 – your skin raw and darker
• Day 3 – your skin is still raw and the area feels itchy
• Day 5 – If needed, you can wear make-up (mineral make-up recommended)
• Day 6/7 – you are usually back to your baseline
• Day 8/9 – Redness typically resolves

Please note that the recovery time of the neck area is usually longer. It takes approximately 2 -3 weeks to bronze and peel.

What are the post-treatment instructions?
It is vital to continually keep the skin moist after treatment with an ointment or moisturizer. Occlusive products such as Vaseline and Aquaphor work well to retain moisture and should be applied at least 2-3 times daily. We may provide patients with a post treatment kit. Purchase a gentle cleanser and a quality SPF to protect the area from the sun. Cool compresses such as wet paper towels or frozen peas helps to ease the sunburned/tight feeling normally felt on day one. To relieve itching, it is helpful to create a solution of vinegar and water (1 teaspoon of vinegar and 2 cups of water). Avoid the sun, excessive dryness or heat. Eat healthy, refrain from alcohol and drink plenty of water. You may take Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen after treatment to reduce pain or discomfort.

How long do results lasts?
This depends on how well the patient has followed post op instructions and maintains an appropriate skin care regime. It also depends on the aggressiveness of the treatment parameters. Please keep in mind that as you get older, skin continues to age and you may benefit from receiving additional treatments to sustain results.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology utilizes a large spectrum of light wavelengths to treat the skin.

The Cynosure MaxG handpiece emits pulses of light simultaneously at the upper and lower ends of the spectrum in order to maintain efficacy while limiting side effects. The pulses are absorbed by the pigment in brown spots and the blood in visible blood vessels. This light energy is then converted to heat. The heat shrinks the blood vessels and works to break down cells that create the pigment.

Portions of the light spectrum have wavelengths that are ideal for treatments of:

·         Sunspots (UV damage)

·         Rosacea (excessive skin redness and increased blood vessels)

·         Melasma (pigmentation around the eyes and cheeks)

·         Telangiectasias (broken capillaries) and smaller facial vessels

What Can I Expect?

It is extremely important that you are NOT sunburned or tanned (including artificial tans) when the treatment is performed, as this may interfere with the IPL procedure and increase risk of side effects. A mild warmth or pinching sensation on the skin will tell you when the laser is being pulsed. No anesthesia is necessary, but a topical gel is often applied during the treatment.

Advantages of the MAX G handpiece are:

•    Visible results after just one treatment
•    Simple procedure with minimal discomfort
•    Quick, non-invasive treatment sessions
•    Excellent treatment outcomes

After the treatment:

Immediately after treatment, you may feel like you have a mild sunburn, with minor redness and possibly some swelling. This usually lasts less than 24 hours, and can be soothed with cold compresses. Your brown spots will also darken temporarily after each treatment and be naturally shed from the skin within 2 weeks. Moisturizer and sunscreen should be applied immediately afterwards and should be continued throughout the duration of your IPL Photofacial treatment.

For most patients, it takes 4-6 treatments spaced approximately 3 or 4 weeks apart.

Undo AGE damage and SUN spots.

MAX G is fast, easy, comfortable photorejuvenation to improve:

  • Sun spots

  • Age Spots

  • Rosacea

  • Capillaries

  • Facial Redness

Pulses of light target and erase broken vessels at the surface of your skin without harming surrounding tissue. As a result, you enjoy clearer skin that looks younger and fresher.

IPL vessel treatment can erase:

•    spider veins
•    broken vessels
•    telangiectasias

Take years off your face with laser or IPL vessel treatments that deliver:

•    Fast, easy removal of broken vessels and spider veins
•    Comfortable, convenient facial treatment sessions
•    Rapid recovery with no downtime
•    Non-surgical vessel treatment that’s ideal for all skin types

Light-based rosacea treatment can reduce rosacea redness and “flushing” to reveal clearer, more natural-looking skin in just a few easy treatments, practically pain-free — providing a more permanent result than topical creams.

Light-based rosacea treatment can effectively reduce:

•    Rash, redness, and flushing
•    Acne-like papules, pustules, and patches
•    Rosacea swelling, inflammation, and discomfort

Rosacea treatments use pulses of light to target and treat the blood vessels responsible for the chronic redness that appears on your skin. Once the vessels responsible for the rosacea are treated, the redness and rash can disappear. Best of all, rosacea treatment can provide skin tone improvement by diminishing the appearance of broken blood vessels and acne-like breakouts associated with this common skin condition.

Oral medication and antibiotics for rosacea treatment can have systemic side effects and can take weeks to be effective. Medication-based treatments can also be dangerous for women who are pregnant or nursing. Light-based treatment for rosacea is a targeted remedy that affects only the blood vessels without harming healthy skin, so it may be a good alternative to creams and oral medications.

It also works quickly—sessions may take less than 30 minutes and you may see visible improvement after your very first treatment.

Advantages of light-based rosacea treatment include:
•    Fast, easy treatment sessions with little-to-no discomfort
•    Comfortable sessions that can take 30 minutes or less
•    Excellent results with little-to-no recovery time
